TG4 Celebrates Outstanding Year of Viewership and Engagement in 2024

80% of Ireland Tunes into TG4 as the Irish language channel achieves growth across TV, Online, and Social Media.

TG4 has concluded a remarkable 2024, captivating audiences with acclaimed dramas, exceptional sports coverage, and outstanding cultural programming.

Over 80% of the Irish population—equating to 3.73 million people—tuned into TG4 at some point during the year. The channel’s audience share rose from 2.1% in 2023 to 2.2% in 2024 ( our highest audience share since 2009), cementing its status as Ireland’s 7th most-watched channel for the second consecutive year.

This surge in popularity extended beyond television, with 4.3 million video views on the TG4 Player (VOD & Live), a 23% increase, and an astonishing 80 million views across TG4’s social media channels, thanks to viral moments and innovative content strategies.

Sports that stole the show:

TG4’s reputation as a home for sport was stronger than ever, with GAA BEO, Peil na mBan, and Rugbaí Beo delivering unforgettable moments.

Among the highlights:

  • The AIB Club Football Final (Watty Graham’s GAC vs. St. Brigid’s) drew an audience of 263,600, making it the year’s most-watched programme.
  • The Allianz Football League Final (Dublin vs. Derry) attracted 230,900 viewers, and the Peil na mBan Final (Galway vs. Kerry) was among the channel’s top 10 broadcasts.

  • Rugbaí Beo’s United Rugby Championship coverage also proved to be a major draw for fans.
  • In a new partnership with GAA Handball, Liathróid Láimhe live coverage and documentaries reached over 1 million (online & linear) with viewers tuning in from 55 countries.

Away from sports, TG4 delivered world-class entertainment, showcasing the best of Irish storytelling:

  • An Cailín Ciúin, the Oscar-nominated Irish-language film, made its debut on TG4 on Christmas Day, becoming the highlight of the festive season. This emotional tale has made history and set a benchmark for Irish-language cinema.

The Cúla4 channel celebrated a significant milestone in 2024, marking its first year on air, alongside an 18% increase in viewership for the Cúla4 player.

The Cúla4 website continues to attract a global audience, demonstrating its value as a vital resource for parents and teachers supporting children in learning the language.

With over 1.7 million website views since launch and an impressive average engagement time of 20 minutes per engaged user, its reach is undeniable.

Popular Cúla4 programmes in 2024 included CoComelon, Super Simple Amhráin, Taffy, Am Foghlama le Timmy, and new homegrown content such as Nuacht Cúla4, Lí Ban, Siar Linn, Mo Pheata, Is Mise, and many more.

TG4’s Social Media: A Growing Powerhouse:

TG4’s innovative approach to social media yielded over 80 million views across platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, Sky Blue and YouTube.

  • Leo Earley, a gifted young storyteller, captivated hearts across Ireland with his enchanting performance during Fleadh 2024.
