LGFA @ 50 - Documentary celebrating 50 years of Ladies Gaelic Football
TG4 Sunday 22nd December 4pm
16.12.24
LGFA @ 50 is a commemoration of the achievements of the LGFA from humble beginnings to today, creating a place for itself in Irish society.
In this special documentary, we honour 50 years of the exceptional ladies football sport in Ireland. It will take viewers on a journey into the heart of the sport, from the local pitch all the way to Croke Park. We will travel across the country meeting today’s players, leaders and fans – those who are and have been instrumental in the success of Ladies Football. We will hear from those who put their heart and soul into the sport and how important it is to them. The pioneers, the players and former players. We will also hear the story of the society, from the influence of Irish society on it – to the impact that Ladies Football now has on the country’s society. From the historical highlights to the various obstacles that were and are still in front of them.
Ladies Football is much more than a sport!
From a small, low base to one of the fastest growing sports in the country, we look at the obstacles that faced our pioneers – the women who were bold enough to challenge the convention of the time in Irish society to put the sport on its feet. We reveal the determination, the enthusiasm, the recovery, and the passion that was there since the early days. They laid out the road for generations of footballers to come. Along the way, we will recall the famous events, unforgettable games that are etched in people’s memories. And above all, we will find out how Ladies’ Football – the fastest growing sport in Ireland – is now the Centrepoint of the Irish community.
This documentary will reveal the core stories of some of the greatest Ladies’ football personalities in the country. On this journey, from small pitches by the sea in Ventry, to the mountains of Donegal, there will be rural views of Ireland, but there will also be a contrast with urban areas such as Cork, Galway and Dublin. Visiting the beautiful places around the country with our participants, we will create that connection with the native place. The pioneers who were working in the background will give us an understanding of the national and international forces that helped establish and strengthen the LGFA as an organisation and community. This will be central to the story.
