Ratings increase for TG4 over Christmas Period
Christmas share on TG4 up 13% from 2018 for Christmas period

TG4 was the 6th most watched television station in Ireland in 2019, and had a share of 2.7% on average over Christmas. TG4 had a daily reach of 569,000 and an overall reach of almost 2 million viewers. On Christmas Eve, 28th December and New Year’s Day, TG4 had over 3% share.
‘Opry le Daniel’ celebrating Margo’s 55 years in the music industry attracted the highest viewership on Christmas Eve with an average audience of 83,000. The deferred coverage of Leinster v Munster on ‘Rugbaí Beo’ on December 28th was the 2nd most watched programme over Christmas with an average viewership of 81,000 and 7% share of the audience.
The Christmas movie schedule also proved popular with Irish viewers, ‘Into the West’ was the most watched programme on Christmas Day with 79,000 on average tuning in. ‘Dirty Dancing’ on Christmas Eve attracted 9% of the viewership on the night with over 76,000 on average watching.
Newly produced documentaries about Phil Coulter & Richard Harris ‘Phil Coulter – Mo Shaol’ and ‘Fear Darb Ainm Harris’ also proved popular choices in prime time schedule slots of 9:30pm on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day attracting over 60,000 and 53,000 viewers respectively.
TG4’s New Year’s Eve live show from Peacocks Hotel in Connemara ‘Fáilte 2020’ featuring live music from Sharon Shannon, Mundy, Frankie Gavin and others also was well received on social media and brought a healthy 4% share.
