Seo Linn’s Stiofán Ó Fearail is a rising star at Irish language Media Awards
Seo Linn’s lead singer, Stiofán Ó Fearail, who stunned the audience at the recent RTÉ Centenary show on Easter Monday, broadcaster Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh and journalist Cathal Mac Coille are amongst the nominees for this year’s Oireachtas Media Awards which will take place on Friday, 13th May in Salthill Hotel, Galway. This awards ceremony, which honours journalists, presenters, programme makers, actors and others within the Irish language media sector, again will be presented by RTÉ newscaster, Aengus Mac Grianna.
“I wish to congratulate all of the nominees on this year’s shortlist”, says Liam Ó Maolaodha, Director of An tOireachtas. “The Media Awards recognise the achievements and accolades of Irish language broadcasters throughout the year and celebrate the constant growth of the industry. We are delighted that all of this year’s nominees reflect such a high standard”, he said.
As expected, the theme of 1916 is prevalent in this year’s nominations with a range of programmes based on this theme making the short list. They include 1916: Seachtar Dearmadta which is nominated for Television Series of the Year and is produced by Abú Media and narrated by Brendan Gleeson. This show is a follow up to Abú Media’s IFTA winning series 1916: Seachtar na Cásca, an historical documentary series about the seven men executed in Kilmainham Gaol after the Rising. Nominated for Best Film/Programme is Sheehy Skeffington: Síochánaí, produced by Dearcán Media. This film tells the story of the killing of Francis Sheehy Skeffington by British troops after he witnessed the killing of a boy who was out after curfew during the Rising.
This year, a new category of Best Short Film has been added which is aimed at attracting new talent from the Irish language film industry. Screenings of the short films will be held in Salthill Hotel, Galway, on Friday 13th May ahead of the awards ceremony that evening.
Well-known broadcaster Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh is taking centre stage in the radio categories this year. She has been nominated for Radio Broadcaster of the Year for her weekly magazine show, Bláthnaid Libh, on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. That same show is also nominated for Best Radio Programme alongside Splanc on Newstalk which is presented by Rónán Ó Muirthile. Morning Ireland broadcaster Cathal Mac Coille has been nominated for Journalist of the Year for his column in Tuairisc.ie.
Joe Steve Ó Neachtain is up for Best Actor for his role as Peadar in Ros na Rún, which he has been playing for twenty years. Róisín Ní Chéileachair is in the running for her role as Móna in TG4’s brand new show EIPIC (Magamedia) which tells the story of five rural teenagers who take over a disused post office to start a musical revolution.
Nominees for best website include raidiofailte.com, tuairisc.ie, tg4.ie and meoneile.ie.
