Arkle romps home again – for TG4 at 2015 Celtic Media Festival

22.04.15

With contributions from Ted Walsh, Davy Russell, legendary racing  broadcaster Sir Peter O’Sullevan and Éamon Dunphy, Arkle explores the facts and the myths in the story of the greatest Irish steeplechaser ever.   In 1964 he beat the champion of England in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.  As a result, Arkle’s victory over Mill House in that race gave it the title of  The Race of the Century. This programme was produced  by independent Touchline Media  and broadcast by TG4 to  celebrate the 50th anniversary of this extraordinary rivalry, recalling a golden era when this beloved Irish horse changed the face and popularity of National Hunt racing forever.

The Celtic Media Festival (CMF) is one of the most prestigious and long-established TV and media festivals in these islands.  It is held each year,  rotating between venues in the various Celtic nations and regions.  It combines a three-day media conference that attracts broadcasters, producers, media and students with a competition across the full range of Film, TV, Radio and new media content genres.  CMF content awards are highly-coveted.  Entries go through a national pre-selection phase in each country announced in February with the selected national winners advancing to the international Festival. TG4 Sports Editor, Rónán Ó Coisdealbha is delighted at today’s success at the Celtic Media Festival.  “As well as meeting the needs of the domestic TV audience, our content is now reaching people all over the world through our Player and other smart devices”, he said. “It is  particularly gratifying to see our sports output standing up to high-level competition from the best content from Scotland, Wales and indeed Ireland”, he said  “and it reaffirms our conviction that quality will always travel well, just as Arkle proved many times in his career.”
