Viewers around the world can now see if the sunny south-east really lives up to its title, thanks to a newly installed TG4 weather camera in An Rinn in the Waterford Gaeltacht. This new camera provides real-time weather pictures that can be accessed on the channel’s website at www.tg4.ie/aimsir. The images it supplies will also be available as a backdrop for the Aimsir Láithreach weather bulletins broadcast on TG4 at regular intervals each evening.

The channel’s bright and accurate weather forecasting has been acclaimed by viewers and critics as a key and unique feature in its output since its establishment almost twenty years ago. It places an emphasis on clear and accessible weather information as well as providing succinct regional and maritime forecasts for people engaged in weather-dependent activities such as agriculture, fishing and outdoor leisure activities.
Other recent developments in the channel’s weather output saw the introduction of new HD (high definition) graphics and charts as well as a fun list of Irish language weather terms and phrases in each of the major dialects of Irish. The new Waterford-based camera will be of particular interest to one of the channel’s weather presenters, Irial Ó Ceallaigh, a native of An Rinn. He can now check the weather picture in his own parish at any time of day or night as well as including it in his bulletins (without neglecting the other images also available to all from the TG4 weather cameras already situated in key Gaeltacht locations in Donegal (Gaoth Dobhair), West Kerry (Dún Chaoin) and at TG4 Headquarters in Galway (Baile na hAbhann).
Speaking after today’s meeting of the TG4 Board held in An Rinn, Pádhraic Ó Ciardha, Deputy CEO of TG4 welcomed the new developments: “The Irish language provides a rich and diverse vocabulary of terms for the many different kinds of weather we experience in Ireland,” he said. “ TG4 presents weather information in a way that is both visually attractive and accessible to all while celebrating the wealth of terms in Irish for describing weather. We are sure that this new camera in the Waterford Gaeltacht will further arouse viewers’ curiosity as does our list of weather terms as Gaeilge. We continue this viewer engagement at eolas@tg4.ie or in the ongoing Twitter dialogue (@AimsirTG4).”
